Treatment Information

What is the Difference Between Dry Needling and Acupuncture?

Both dry needling and acupuncture involve the insertion of fine, sterile single-use needles into specific areas of the body. While the techniques may appear similar, they are based on different principles.

Dry Needling is based on modern Western medicine and is commonly used by physiotherapists to treat muscle pain, tension and movement dysfunction. Needles are inserted into trigger points or tight bands of muscle to help reduce pain, improve blood flow, promote muscle relaxation and restore normal function.

Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine and involves the insertion of needles into specific points along energy pathways, known as meridians, throughout the body. The aim is to restore balance and influence the body’s natural healing processes.

At MindBody&YOU Physiotherapy, dry needling is used as one of many treatment options and is always integrated within a broader physiotherapy assessment and treatment plan.

What is Dry Needling with Electrical Stimulation?

Dry Needling with Electrical Stimulation, DNES, combines traditional dry needling with gentle electrical stimulation delivered through the needles using a specialised electrotherapy device.

The addition of electrical stimulation may help reduce pain, encourage muscle relaxation, improve muscle activation and enhance treatment outcomes in some individuals. The frequency, intensity and mode of stimulation are tailored to the individual’s condition and treatment goals.

DNES may be used as part of a comprehensive physiotherapy treatment plan and is often combined with hands-on therapy, exercise and movement rehabilitation strategies.

What is Low-Level Laser Therapy?

Low-Level Laser Therapy, LLLT, is a non-invasive, TGA-approved treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to support tissue healing and assist with pain, inflammation and muscle relaxation.

The light energy is absorbed by the body’s tissues, where it helps stimulate cellular activity, circulation and the body’s natural healing processes. LLLT is painless, does not produce heat, and may be used to support recovery from a range of musculoskeletal and soft tissue conditions.

As with all treatment options, LLLT is used as part of an individualised physiotherapy treatment plan and may be combined with hands-on therapy, exercise and rehabilitation strategies.

What is Mindful Movement?

Mindful movement involves bringing gentle awareness and attention to the body’s movements, sensations and breathing while exercising or performing everyday activities.

Rather than focusing solely on completing an exercise, mindful movement encourages individuals to notice how their body feels, move with greater ease and confidence, and reduce unnecessary tension or guarding. This approach may help improve body awareness, movement patterns, nervous system regulation and overall wellbeing.

Mindful movement can be particularly helpful for individuals experiencing persistent pain, stress, fear of movement or reduced confidence with physical activity. It is often integrated into physiotherapy rehabilitation, exercise programs and recovery strategies.

What is Pain Reprocessing Therapy?

Pain Reprocessing Therapy, PRT, is an evidence-based approach used to support recovery from some forms of persistent and neuroplastic pain. It helps individuals better understand the role of the brain and nervous system in pain and develop greater confidence, safety and ease with movement and daily activities.

At MindBody&YOU Physiotherapy, PRT principles are integrated within a broader physiotherapy approach that may also include movement rehabilitation, exercise, hands-on treatment, education and nervous system-informed strategies.
